![]() Unlike many Filter'Tron equipped Gretsches, the G6139T-CBDC doesn't feature a three-position tone switch (aka the 'mud switch'). Anyone who has ever plugged in an ES-335 and played one in anger will know that this in no way translates to a lack of sustain or resonance in an electric scenario, but more on that later. Most ES-335s utilise a maple centre-block with a spruce 'fillet' between it and the maple laminate top.įor anyone used to a full hollowbody, the guitar here exhibits a plonkier, less lively, slightly banjo-like acoustic response, much like Gibson's flagship semi. The bass-side cutaway makes for a more compact ride with easy upper-fret access. The Double Cutaway Falcon is constructed from three-ply maple with a spruce centre block that is itself chambered at the lower bout in the interests of weight reduction and resonance. "The Double Cutaway Falcon is constructed from three-ply maple with a spruce centre block that is itself chambered at the lower bout" This brings the Center-Block Falcon smack bang into Gibson ES-335 territory in physical terms and as a result it feels well proportioned to all but the most Lilliputian of six-stringers. ![]() With a lower bout width of 406.4mm (16 inches) and a body depth of 44.45 mm (1.75 inches), the Falcon Center-Block Double Cutaway is immediately an easier beast to grapple with than the traditional 431.7mm (17-inch) wide, 70mm (2.75-inch) deep full hollowbody models elsewhere in the Gretsch catalogue and those of old. Not sure what your bracing options are for non-CB Falcons.Like the other instruments in the company's Professional Collection, the guitar here is manufactured in modest numbers in the small Terada factory in Kanie, Japan with much of the production process being carried out the old- fashioned way, by hand. ![]() My Black Phoenix has trestle bracing, no center block, and I don't have any problems with excessive feedback. My 6120 is from the mid-90's and has a 5 ply top, and it feeds back like crazy in a band setting. Center block - The CB Gretschs I've played are pretty heavy, compared to their fully hollow mates. I probably couldn't bring myself to spend that much money on a WF if it didn't have a Bigsby. In fact, I'm actively looking for used HS filtertrons for my old 6120, even thought I prefer TV Jones, because the HS Filters are way cheaper and sound great.ģ. TV Jones' Classics are, in my opinion, significantly better than all other filtertrons, however, they are expensive and stock Gretsch HS Filtertrons are very good. I personally have grown to prefer Filtertrons, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me if a WF had dynas. Dynasonics: You can get that great Gretsch sound out of either type of pickup. If I were you, I'd play it safe and stick with the more traditional single cut.Ģ. I bought the single cut because that's what a quintessential WF has, but I still crave a DC Falcon or Panther. In retrospect, I don't think it would have made much difference, at least not plugged in. single cut: I had the same concern as you - prefer the look of a DC WF, but concerned the extra cut, and more importantly, the shallower depth of the body, would affect tone. What do you guys recommend?Īlso, what's your take on the High Sensitive Filter'Tron vs Dynasonic vs TV Jones? Which of these is the most versatile and what are the differences between them? If you have played some or all of the above guitars, your input would be invaluable.ġ. The same goes for the center block, it's supposed to reduce feedback but does it sacrifice some tone? I want the most iconic/rich Gretsch sound and that matters to me more than any visual aspect of the guitar. I like the look of the double cutaways but I'm concerned about a possible loss in the richness of that great Gretsch sound. I've narrowed down my choices to the following:ġ)G6136T White Falcon(single-cutaway, Filter Tron pickups)Ģ)G6136DC White Falcon(double cutaway, Filter Tron pickups)ģ)Gretsch G6139T-CBDC(Looks to be the same as above with a center block)Ĥ)G6136CST("Based on the earliest White Falcon guitars of the mid 50s", single cutaway, dynasonic pickups)ĥ)G6139CB(Single-cutaway, center block, Filter Tron pickups, No Bigsby) I like to play jazz, blues and classic rock. I'll have to rely solely on physical differences between the guitars and the opinions held by you lovely people. Thus the option of playing each White falcon to see which one suits me best is ruled out. I'd have to order one from Europe or the USA. I've finally saved up the funds required to get myself a brand new White Falcon! The problem is, I live in Sri Lanka where guitar shops most definitely do not carry White Falcons.
